Chester's military history started with the Romans who built Deva Castra (Chester), a fortification, to guard the border between England and Wales; Chester is only a few miles from the border.

Chester is lucky because a lot of its history is still visible. The city has the most complete set of City Walls, and the largest uncovered Roman amphitheatre in the country.
